A Quick History

Delta Dental of Rhode Island is the state's largest dental insurer with nearly 655,000 members and 9 out of 10 of the state's dentists. As a company, we continue to grow and expand, bringing jobs and business to the state.

Established in 1959 by the RI General Assembly as the Rhode Island State Dental Service Corporation, the company became a Delta Dental plan in 1973.

From 1973-1993, the plan was administered under an agreement with
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island. Since January of 1993, the plan has been a completely independent entity.

Throughout its history, Delta Dental has experienced steady growth. In 1995, Delta Dental surpassed the quarter of a million members mark. The company offers an unlimited variety of cost-effective group plan designs to meet the needs of both local and national accounts.

In 1997, we opened a new operations center, combining our corporate headquarters with key service functions including customer service, claims processing and membership, more than doubling our staff size.
